Itsy Bitsy Concepts

This April Itsy Bitsy Story Time focuses on CONCEPTS and OPPOSITES! Concepts are key to early language and reading development and they are learned in pairs that are opposites! For more information on this fascinating developmental milestone, check out this Super Duper Handy Handout!

Here are the songs and rhymes we will use this month:

Finger Rhyme: This is Big!

This is big, big, big. (Stretch hands far to side)
This is small, small, small. (Cup hands together over lap)
This is short, short, short. (Hold palms horizontally, close)
This is tall, tall, tall. (Hold palms horizontally, far apart)
This is fast, fast, fast. (roll hands quickly)
This is slow, slow, slow. (roll hands slowly)
This is yes, yes, yes. (nod)
This is no, no, no! (shake head)

Song: If You’re Happy and You Know It!

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands…

Mad – Stomp Feet
Excited – Jump for Joy!
Sad – say boo-hoo
Hungry – Rub your belly
Full – Say I’m full
Dirty – Wash your face
Clean – Shout Hooray!

Let’s Bounce!

Oh, the noble Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
and he marched them down again
And when they were up, they were up
And when they were down, they were down
And when they were only half way up
They were neither up nor down, down, down!

Song: (Tune – “Jingle Bells”)

Hot and cold, new and old,
Opposites I know.
Thick and thin, out and in,
Top and bottom, high and low-oh!

Smile and frown, up and down,
Loud and quiet sounds.
Wet and dry, hello, good-bye,
And the shapes of square and round!

The Elevator Song!

Oh the city is great and the city is grand,
There are lots of tall buildings on a little piece of land,
And we live way up on the 57th floor
And this is what we do when we go out the door,
Take the elevator up take the elevator down,
Take the elevator up take the elevator down,
Take the elevator up take the elevator down,
And turn around!

Action/Calming Rhyme:

Eyes open, Eyes closed,
Wiggle your fingers, Wiggle your nose,
Thumbs up, Thumbs down,
Make a smile, Make a frown,
Wiggle, clap, Wiggle, snap,
Let your hands fly right to your lap.
