2016 Newtown Library Company Mock Caldecott

This week the Wiggleworms held our 2nd annual Mock Caldecott Story Time.

Here are the five books I selected from various Caldecott predictions, presented in the order in which we read them:
(I WISH I could have picked MORE! But 5 is our attention span limit… may have to think about extending the voting over a couple weeks next year!)

Wolfie the Bunny
Wolfie the Bunny
written by Ame Dyckman
illustrated by Zachariah OHora
Adorable story about a family of bunnies that adopts a baby wolf. The kids thought this book was hilarious and it is a fabulous read aloud. The pictures add to the drama (and the humor) of the story.

written and illustrated by Daniel Miyares
This is a beautiful wordless picture book about a young boy, imagination and perseverance. The pictures bring me back to favorite from my own childhood – A Letter for Amy by Ezra Jack Keats. Gorgeous and very moving. The kids loved creating the narrative for the story and were genuinely worried and disappointed for the boy and then joyous when he prevails in the end.

If you Plant a Seed
If You Plant a Seed
written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson
What a delightful lesson about kindness! Stunning illustrations that pop off the page enhance the simple text to tell this beautiful parable. The kids had a huge reaction to the artwork and the positive message of choosing to be kind.

Water is Water
Water Is Water
written by Miranda Paul
illustrated by Jason Chin
Non-fiction picture book at its best. Very clever concept for explaining the water cycle. The kids loved guessing what each step was based on the illustrations and were amazed by the facts at the end.

My Pen
My Pen
written and illustrated by Christopher Myers
I love the simple message of this book amid the intricate and intriguing ink drawings that play with perspective, imagination and contrast. The kids were all begging to have time to draw after we read this – which is exactly the purpose I think!

The Results…

Winners were selected via a voting system in which each participant decorated their own 1st 2nd and 3rd place medals and then used them to vote. (For a link to our official ballot template please click here.) The results were very close!

This year the Wiggleworms selected two Honors books:

If You Plant a Seed written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson
Float written and illustrated by Daniel Miyares

The 2016 Newtown Library Company Mock Caldecott Award goes to:

Wolfie the Bunny written by Ame Dyckman and illustrated by Zachariah OHora

We will hold our official medal ceremony at an upcoming Wiggleworms Story Time. We will post pictures, so check back!

The official American Library Association 2016 Caldecott Medal will be awarded on Monday, January 11, beginning at 8:00 a.m. EST at the ALA Midwinter Convention in Boston. To join in the live webcast click here.
