Hip Hip Hooray, It’s Beach Day!

Today the Wiggleworms started with our Opening Song, where we said hi to the librarians, the books, The “VAH-ses” on the mantle , and our Story Time friends.

BOOK: At the Beach
by Anne & Harlow Rockwell
illustrated by Erin F. Stead

At the Beach

Very simple story about getting ready for the beach and the many activities young children enjoy on a trip to the sea.

Song: “The Waves at the Beach”
Tune: “The Wheels on the Bus”

The waves at the beach go up and down,
Up and down, up and down,

The waves at the beach go up and down,
All though the day!

The clams… go open and shut…
The crabs …crawl back and forth

The sandpipers… scurry all around…
The lobsters… go snap, snap, snap…
etc.

(Sorry, I don’t know where I found this one – have been using it for years!)

BOOK: Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach
by James Dean

Pete beach

Pete is always a hit!  In this story Pete is scared of going into the water at the beach, but once he decides to give it a try he is happy he did and sees it is not scary.  The kids picked up on the clues quickly and we had a nice discussion about how sometimes trying new things can be scary.

GAME CUBE!- check out the link to these fun songs we pick by rolling our Game Cube dice!

This week we sang “Grow a Banana” and “Shake Your Wiggles Out!”

Flannel Story:
How Will We Get to the Beach:
A Guessing Game Story
by Brigitte Luciani
illustrated by Eve Tharlet
How will we get to the beachP1100115

My flannel board version of this story was a huge hit – for more details on the flannel set see my Flannel Friday post HERE!

The kids loved this story/game – the books is very sweet!

Book: Swimmy
by Leo Lionni

Swimmy

One of my own childhood favorites, non of the kids or grown ups were familiar with this story!  A small black fish has an adventure in the ocean and turns adversity into a strength. After losing his own school he finds a new family and teaches them to work together to survive.  Gorgeously illustrated this book was a 1964 Caldecott Honor Book.

SHUFFLE DANCE: Check out our dance list here!

This week we danced to “Doing the Penguin” – went perfectly with our beach theme!

BOOK: Harry by the Sea
by Gene Zion
illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham

Harry by the Sea

Hysterical book about a lost dog on the beach!  The kids really got into it – and I loved turning them on to an OLD book!

CRAFT:  Swimmy Stamping

P1100116 P1100117

MATERIALS:
Pre-cut construction paper fish
Fish stampers (I made mine from bottle tops and craft foam)
Red stamp pad (my personal favorite is Ultra Washable!)
Black stamp pad

DIRECTIONS:
Stamp the fish cut out with red fish to form one giant fish out of many smaller ones. Use one black stamped fish as the eye, just like in the book Swimmy.

Closing Rhyme & Song

How it Went:

Fun theme and fun, flexible group of kids this week!  Can’t wait to go to the beach this summer!
