In honor of the opening of the MLB season we celebrated BASEBALL today in Wiggleworms Story Time!
First we sang our Opening Song. Today we said hello to our volunteer librarian, Ms. Karolyn (our librarian) and our Story Time friends as well as the books!
BOOK: Goodnight Baseball
by Michael Dahl
illustrated by Christina Forshay
This is a very simple book with adorable illustrations showing the day in the life of a young boy going to a ball game with his Dad.
“Grown a Banana” AGAIN! I think this is their favorite!
BOOK: Players in Pigtails
by Shayna Corey
illustrated by Rebecca Gibbon
Great book about Katie Casey – a fictional portrait of a player in the All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League. Founded by Phillip Wrigley (of Wrigley Field and Wrigley gum fame) during WWII, the league was very popular in the midwest. The book is wonderful and celebrates the real women in the League, their exceptional baseball skills and shows how they shattered many stereotypes. We shortened the story by a few pages for this group. The kids were amazed – but also baffled because in their view of course girls can play baseball!
Song: Take Me Out to the Ballgame
Take me out to the ballgame,
Take me out to the crowd!
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks,
I don’t care if we ever get back!
For it’s root, root, root for the ________________
If they don’t win it’s a shame!
For it’s one! Two! Three strikes, You’re Out!
At the old ballgame!
(by Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer, 1908 – did you know this song is about a woman who loves baseball? I didn’t!)
BOOK: Pete the Cat: Play Ball!
by James Dean
I love Pete! In this book Pete makes many mistakes during a baseball game, but nothing gets him down and having fun and trying your best are all that matters!
Flannel Game – Baseball!
For a full description of this flannel and game please click here! Tons of fun and the score was tied!
Video Song & Dancing: What Does the Phanatic Say?
We are located in the Philadelphia suburbs and my group loves “What Does the Fox Say!” They were amused by this version!
My apologies for anyone who had already left before I remembered to put this on!
Pre-cut construction paper penants
Decorate your own penant! The stamps were made using recycled bottle tops and foam letters.
How it Went:
Fun! This group has some baseball fans (or Phans as we say in Phillie!) and they were into this Story Time! The Baseball Game Flannel Board was an especially big hit!
